GAAP vs. The Common App Video

Our video, “GAAP vs. The Common App,” showcases the perspectives of recently admitted Georgetown students on the question of whether Georgetown should switch from its individual application to the Common Application, which 900 U.S. schools are already on. The question is a long-debated subject both within the Georgetown community and outside of it. Most recently, InterAc, the coalition of the Georgetown Student Body President and Academic Councils released a statement on March 29 requesting that Georgetown switch to the Common App. The statement reasoned that adopting the Common App would increase Georgetown’s number of qualified applicants, especially those from racially and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds. However, the Georgetown administration professed its…

2023 Mass Shootings in the U.S.

From Jan. 1, 2023 to the end of March 2023, there have been 131 mass shootings worldwide. The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as a shooting in which four or more people are shot or killed. Each point on the map reflects each shooting’s location. When clicked on, each pin shows the date of the shooting, the number of people killed, and the number injured. All but two of these shootings occurred in the United States. Given this, the data set is especially relevant as Congress holds hearings passionately debating the extent of the Second Amendment Rights, such as the March 23 hearing titled “The Bureau of Alcohol,…

Freshfarm, Fresh Food, and Fresh Faces Podcast

A woman peruses some fresh peaches from a produce vendor at the Dupont Circle Farmers Market. The majority of the vendors, such as the one above, are small businesses. Credit: Wikimedia Commons I really enjoyed the process of researching my podcast and learning about the history of diversity in farmers markets in DC. This research helped me locate my first source to reach out to — the Communications team at Freshfarm, the non-profit organization that runs all of the farmers markets in DC. Katie Wolffe, the Senior Markets Manager, responded to me over a period of a couple days. However, she was really busy and we did not talk until…

“This Is Love” and “Reply All” Review

“Something Large and Wild,” a 2018 podcast episode of “This is Love,” combines conversation and narration to tell a heartwarming story about an interspecies connection between a teenage girl and a baby whale.  The podcast, which examines stories about the varying nature of love, centers on a conversation between Lynne Cox and the host, Phoebe Judge. Cox, a long-distance swimmer who set the world record for the fastest English Channel swim, reflected back nearly 50 years on the encounter.  Cox was going for a routine swim in the Pacific Ocean one early morning when she was 17 when suddenly she felt something massive swimming alongside. Steve, an elderly bait shop…

Dumbarton Oaks Gardens: A Springtime Oasis in the City

The Dumbarton Oaks Gardens sprawl across 53 acres in the hills of northwest Washington, D.C. Dumbarton Oaks Gardens were meticulously designed in 1921 on the then-untended grounds of the wealthy Bliss family’s former estate. Tom Sietsema: Cuisine Connoisseur, Yet Midwestern Everyman

There are no recognizable photographs of Tom Sietsema online. “I’m always stepping out of family photos,” Sietsema, the Washington Post food critic, said, laughing. “No one’s gotten a picture with me for forty years.” For the past twenty-two years, Sietsema has dined out for ten meals a week at an array of Washington restaurants. He has won an award for his ranking of the ten best food cities in America. He is so renowned in Washington that restaurants have figured out his aliases.  When picturing a food critic, the image of Ratatouille’s Anton Ego immediately comes to mind – a black-clad figure with a snobbish trademark scowl. Sietsema defies this…

New Year, New Campus: A One-Month Check-In on College Students’ New Year’s Resolutions

The average American typically discards their New Year’s resolution by Feb. 1 – after just 32 days, according to a 2020 survey conducted by OnePoll. But how likely are college students to keep their resolutions? Fifty-two percent of the study’s respondents cited the cause for breaking their resolutions as a lack of self-discipline. Forty-three percent said their hectic schedules leave no time for them to follow through with their lofty and perhaps too-optimistic resolutions. College students have both of these risk factors for breaking resolutions. They generally suffer from a lack of self-control — being away from their parents for the first time results in a string of late nights,…
